Ask MusicRadar: what are the best VST plug-in synths you can buy?

Tell us about the soft synths that make you smile
Welcome, once again, to Ask MusicRadar, the now legendary regular feature that involves us asking you to tell us what's great. In this case, we want you to come down off the fence and name what you think are the best software plug-in synths - be they VST, AU or RTAS - that you can buy today.
One thing's for certain: you've got plenty to choose from. The market is now flooded with virtual synths that vary wildly in terms of look, feel and sound, so choosing a favourite subtractive, additive, FM, hybrid, wavetable or any other type of instrument won't be easy.
But choose you must - we'll leave free synths for another time, so only nominate those that you have to pay for. To narrow down the field a little more, we'll also exclude samplers, and we'll knock out dedicated drum machines, too.
It's 'proper' synths we're talking about here, so keep that in mind.
What to do now
Get involved! Choose your favourite plug-in synths and tell us about them (developer, name and reasons why) like this:
Via MusicRadar (log in and leave a comment below with a link as usual)
Or via email@example.com (just send an email the old-fashioned way)
We'll then be able to compile a list of the best soft synths currently available for purchase, and we'll present this to you in a lovely gallery.
